What is "Mediation"?

Mediation is a private way to discuss child visitation & custody problems and reach agreements. A "Mediator" examines your case with you and the other party and assists parents in reaching an agreement that you both can accept.


How do I access mediation?

During a Family Court hearing, the Judge may order you to mediation if he feels it would benefit you and your children.
By filing motions for modification of custody or visitation, marriage dissolution (with children involved), establishment of parental relationship- you and the other party are ordered to mediation.

When visitation disputes involving your children arise that you are unable to resolve, you may call Family Court Services @ 636-4425 to schedule an appointment with the Family Law Mediator.

What if I need an investigation for guardianship and/or conservatorship?

Call Family Court Services @ 831-636-4425 to schedule an appointment regarding a Guardianship or a Conservatorship Investigation. An office appointment as well as a home visit or facility visit appointment will be made for you.


What if I am underage and want to be married?

An interview with the mediator is necessary for approval of underage marriages. Call Family Court services @ 831-636-4425 to schedule an appointment. The following paperwork is necessary to bring to the appointment: Birth Certificates, Driver's licenses, Picture ID's, or school ID's with pictures.


How do I emancipate?

An interview with the Mediator is a necessary part of the Emancipation process after filing the appropriate papers. Call Family Court Services @ 831-636-4425.


How do stepparent adoptions work?

An office appointment as well as a home visit appointment maybe necessary for stepparent adoptions after filing the appropriate papers. Call Family Court Services @ 831-636-4425. The following paperwork is necessary to bring to the office appointment: Birth certificate of the child(ren), Parental Rights Termination form signed by other parent.
